Metal artifact reduction strategies for improved attenuation correction in hybrid PET/CT imaging

Metallic implants are known to generate bright and dark streaking artifacts in x-ray computedtomography (CT) images, which in turn propagate to corresponding functional positron emissiontomography (PET) images during the CT-based attenuation correction procedure commonlyused on hybrid clinical PET/CT scanners. Therefore, visual artifacts and overestimation and/orunderestimation of the tracer uptake in regions adjacent to metallic implants are likely to occur andas such, inaccurate quantification ...

Photoneutron production and backscattering in high density concretes used for radiation therapy shielding

In the current study, the effect of high density concretes on photoneutron productions in radiation therapy was studied using Monte Carlo simulations. The photon and neutron spectra of an 18 MeV photon beam of the Varian linac head were used for all simulations. Ordinary and five high density concretes made of high density elements were simulated. The studied concretes consisted of Magnetite, Datolite-Galena, Magnetite–Steel, Limonite–Steel, and Serpentine. Our results show ...

Eight Lectures on Theoretical Physics Delivered at Columbia University in 1909

Author: Max PlanckTranslator: A. P. WillsRelease Date: February 29, 2012 [EBook #39017]Language: English The present book has for its object the presentation of the lectures which I deliveredas foreign lecturer at Columbia University in the spring of the present year under thetitle: “The Present System of Theoretical Physics.” The points of view which influencedme in the selection and treatment of the material are given at the beginning of the firstlecture. Essentially, they represen ...

Dosimetry in thyroid follicles due to low-energy electrons of iodine using the Monte Carlo method

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the absorbed dose in thyroid follicles due to low-energy electrons such as Auger and internal conversion electrons, besides beta particles, for iodine radioisotopes ( 131 I, 132 I, 133 I, 134 I and 135 I) utilizing the Monte Carlo method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The dose calculation was performed at follicular level, simulating Auger, internal conversion electrons and beta particles, with the MCNP4C code. The follicles (colloid and follicular cells) were ...

Thyroid Cancer in Clinical Practice by I. Ross McDougall

The number of patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer is increasing dramaticallyin the United States, and there are more than 30,000 new cases annually.About 5% of adults have a thyroid nodule that can be felt and between 300/0and 500/0 have one or more nodules that can be identified by ultrasound.Thyroid Cancer in Clinical Practice covers all aspects of the diagnosis andtreatment of thyroid cancer. The author has spent more than 35 years inNuclear Medicine and Thyroidology in the clinical care o ...

Radiation Protection in Nuclear Medicine by Soren Mattsson Christoph Hoeschen

Radiation protection is an important task for nuclear medicine departmentswith regard to the use of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeuticpurposes. It is important to make sure that the radiation dose to the patients aswell as to staff members is kept “as low as reasonable achievable” (ALARA). Inthe last few years, the use of PET substances with higher photon energy than thepreviously used radionuclides has been more and more common, and the numberof PET radionuclides is ...

Nuclear Signaling Pathways and Targeting Transcription in Cancer by Rakesh Kumar

Regulatory nuclear pathways feeding into the transcription of cancer-relevantmolecules have emerged as the next frontier in pathway-centered cancer therapeutics. The signifi cance of nuclear signaling in cancer is also evident by the convergence ofa large number of signal transduction pathways continuously sensing extracellularmilieu. The cumulative outcome of deregulated cytoplasmic and nuclear signalingis to provide a favorable environment for a cancer cell to survive by overriding deathsignals ...
